Rotork assists BAE Systems in naval base actuator upgrades

Rotork has been working with BAE Systems to improve a sequence of A-range actuators to IQ3 actuators which operate penstocks controlling motion of ships between the ocean and transitional locks and dry docks at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNB Portsmouth).
A sequence of A-range actuators had reached the tip of their operational life after long service in a difficult surroundings. BAE Systems wished to retain all the advantages of electrical actuators, so IQ3 actuators were chosen. These had to be specially tailored by Rotork to beat issues around confined areas and difficult access.
IQ3 actuators and IS gearboxes had been mechanically tailored so that each actuator and gearbox might be manually operated without coming into the confined house. Double designed particular hand auto levers and through drive mechanisms for the actuator and gearbox to remove the need for confined space entry.
Actuators within the IQ vary are watertight, providing ingress protection to IP66/68 at 20 m for 10 days. They have a complicated twin stacked display with configurable information logger functionality, and an absolute position sensor offers reliability and accuracy.
